For busy professionals and single parents who cannot be home when their child’s’ school day has ended, after-school activities are a great way for students to spend their time in a safe and supervised environment. When kids become involved in after hours activities at school, it allows them an opportunity to participate socially, recreationally, and/or scholastically. A healthy alternative to watching TV, surfing the net, or playing video games, kids can participate in extra curricular projects like tutoring other kids in their favorite subject, or getting involved in school clubs, or sports activities.
After school programs are often available for student tutors to help their younger school mates with a variety of subjects . To be a tutor, your child must simply have a willingness to work with younger school mates with different capabilities, and possess the ability to incorporate real life experiences when helping students learn. As a tutor in after school programs, your child will gain a greater understanding of the teaching profession, strengthen their communication skills, and learn to apply their knowledge and abilities to help other students succeed.
There are many different kinds of clubs that kids can participate in after school. Examples include clubs that are dedicated to music, art, chess, foreign languages, math, science and social studies. In addition to being mentally stimulating, and helping with your child’s social skills, club participation can also provide an attractive addition to your child’s college and job applications.
Sports are another great way for your child to invest his or her time after the school day has ended. Playing sports will help your kids stay strong and healthy, and can also provide an environment to learn about teamwork, fair play, and responsibility. Even if they don't make the team, kids can ask the coach about being the team’s manager, or participate in the games simply by rooting for their favorite team.
Providing creative after school programming for children keeps them involved and busy. These activities can have a healthy impact on your children by helping them to develop a greater sense of self-confidence, assurance and independence. Conversely, the teamwork and group decision-making activities also encourage respect for others and cooperative living while providing opportunities for growth in a supportive environment.
