Erica Vargas

I was born and raised in Colorado and have lived in Lakewood, Colorado for most of my life.  I attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York and took the opportunity during that time period to start exploring my interests in law.  I took a semester long judicial program in Washington D.C. to explore various areas of law and get some first hand experience working in the judicial system.  I graduated from Vassar with a Bachelor in Science and Honors in Political Science in 2001.

Upon good advice from a very helpful Political Science professor, I decided to take a year off school before jumping into law school.  I visited San Francisco for several months and then took a full-time job in Denver working as a Contract Analyst for ING.  After working in a business environment for nearly a year I felt comfortable with the “real” world work environment and realized that a career in law was truly what I wanted to devote myself to.

I attended the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law while working full-time at ING.  Having such a full schedule really forced me to organize my daily tasks and prioritize events in my life.  It also really pushed me to appreciate having a balance in life between work, family and everything else that can come along in the big scheme of things.

My final year of law school I was lucky enough to obtain an internship at The Harris Law Firm, P.C.  I knew early on that I wanted to work in an area of law that directly impacted and helped people, and practicing family law gives me the opportunity to not only help people, but to truly guide them into a new and often very different phase of their lives.

Family law requires an open-mindedness that many other areas of law do not entail.  When you deal with family issues the goal is not to win at all costs, but rather to listen to your clients’ needs and look at the big picture and help them achieve new happy and healthy family dynamics.  Family law is a difficult area of law because you deal with good people at a very difficult and desperate time in their lives and they depend on their attorney to guide them through this difficult process.  I take this responsibility extremely serious and never forget how much is at stake in every single case.

Outside of work I try my best to keep an active life style.  I played club level rugby for eight years during undergraduate school and law school and now that my body no longer welcomes that degree of abuse I have taken to calmer sports like volleyball, hiking, and biking.  Colorado is such a beautiful state that despite having lived here most of my life, I am always discovering new scenic areas to explore and enjoy.

I also spend as much time as possible with my family.  My parents live in Las Vegas and my sister resides in San Diego.  We are all very close and working in family law offers a constant reminder of how very valuable maintaining a close relationship with my family is.
