I was born in Colorado and raised in the suburbs of Denver. I always intend to call Colorado my home. I graduated cum laude from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and a Colorado Teaching License in Secondary Social Studies. I taught middle school Social Studies for three years in Aurora, Colorado before attending law school. I left teaching to attend the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law. During law school I earned two Academic Excellence Awards; one in Trusts & Estates and the other in Administrative Law. I also actively participated in the Social Justice Action Group (S-JAG), which is an organization dedicated to furthering social justice in Colorado and nationwide by providing research, writing and strategic planning assistance to organizations passionate about and committed to affecting social change. Through my work with S-JAG, I earned the Julie A. Nice Award for Social Justice Advocacy.
I knew when I was relatively young that I would work with children and their families in some capacity. I started working with children when I was fourteen as a chaperone for gifted children enrolled in college courses during the summer. While I earned my teaching license and while I taught, I also coached gymnastics for a recreational program and metro area high schools. As I transitioned from teaching to law, I knew that I wanted to focus my legal education and career on children and their families. In my second year of law school I worked as a student attorney in the family law clinic. In the clinic I represented clients in domestic abuse and family violence matters and studied the impact of domestic abuse on children. In my last semesters of law school, I had two terrific internships, one at a family law firm and one with a family law judge in Denver. Both of these internships reinforced my desire to work in family law, especially to lessen or alleviate the trauma and impact that divorce and custody litigation may have on the children involved in such matters.
Most of my personal life is also spent on family matters. I take pride in being very dedicated to my immediate and extended family. My husband and I have a lively daughter and a sweet pug that keep life busy and fun. I love to read, mostly memoirs, historical non-fiction, and to my daughter. I also thoroughly enjoy spending time outside. Whether hiking, backpacking or mowing my lawn, being outside tends to be a good source of relaxation.
