Margaret E. Walker
I have practiced family law in Colorado and Kansas since 1977, and my specialties include dissolution (divorce), paternity, modification of child support, parenting time and parental responsibilities. In addition to working to ensure fair settlements in dissolution cases, I also believe part of my role as an attorney is to educate my clients about the impact the law will have on their specific issues. I strive to help them understand the legal implications associated with their choices, and provide them with the information they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. As part of my role as an educator, as well as a senior attorney for the Firm, I offer a monthly seminar at the Firm to provide an overview of the divorce process in Colorado.
I obtained my Juris Doctorate from the University of Wyoming College of Law, where I studied areas that include: family law, basic estate planning, landlord tenant law, and criminal law. After graduation, I became the Director of Student Legal Services at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. While teaching students about their legal rights, I also designed a course called “Families in the Legal Environment,” and taught that class for seven years. Following my tenure at CSU, I became a Clinical Professor at the University of Denver Sturm, College of Law in 1988, and instructed students how to practice law using real clients and actual cases.
Aside from my years of experience as an attorney and an educator, I also have a background in social work. When there are children involved, I do my best to preserve the idea that divorced parents can still interact as a family unit in order to raise children. I firmly believe it is important for parents to understand the necessity of establishing civil means of communication so they can continue to work together for the benefit of their children, even if they are not married.
As a part of my practice, I try to do much more than solve legal problems, and strive to respectfully help the client move forward into the next phase of his or her life.
Outside of the practice of law, my interests also include gardening and spending time with my four year old grandson. Additionally, the activities I enjoy include camping, hiking and volunteering.
