Michael L. Cheroutes Jr. is a second-generation attorney with strong ties to the Denver community. Mike is the son of Michael L. Cheroutes Sr., a founding partner of the Denver office of the Washington D.C. based law firm Hogan and Hartson; and Trisha Flynn Cheroutes, former columnist for The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News. Mike graduated from Colorado Academy high school and Metropolitan State College of Denver, and earned a merit-based scholarship to attend the Texas Wesleyan School of Law.
In recognition of his numerous academic and extra-curricular achievements, Mike received Texas Wesleyan's highest honor in his final year of law school, the McLean-Boulware "Student of the Year" award. He was elected by his classmates to deliver his commencement address, and was selected by law-school faculty to serve on a committee tasked with the hiring of new professors. Mike served with distinction on the moot-court board of directors, and was a member of his school's moot-court national team. The award Mike cherished most, however, was related to his service as president of the student chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union: Mike was honored by the Fort Worth ACLU with the Louise McGuigan award "for outstanding service to the cause of civil liberties," and was the first law student to be invited to join the state Board of Directors for the ACLU of Texas.

Returning to Denver after graduation, Mike focused on domestic law as his primary practice area. He is currently a partner with The Harris Law Firm, which is one of the largest and most prestigious firms in Colorado devoted exclusively to the practice of family law. Mike has excelled in his chosen field, and on several occasions has been invited to appear as a guest attorney on the Tom Martino radio show, Fox 31 News and KOA radio. In the past several years, Mike has handled a number of cases involving international child-custody and abduction, and hopes to one day be recognized as an expert in that field. Mike was recently interviewed for a article regarding domestic and international child abduction published by Law Week Colorado.

Despite a very busy domestic practice, Mike continues to serve his community: He is a former board member of Metro Volunteer Lawyers, the ACLU, and is a current member of the Minoru Yasui Inn of Court. In addition to an ongoing commitment to the cause of civil rights and liberties, Mike is particularly interested in trying to help victims of domestic violence negotiate the legal system without paid counsel: Mike has in the past conducted pro-se seminars for the non-profit organization "Family Tree," and recently has found an outlet for his volunteer efforts in the free clinics offered by the Harris Law Firm to indigent pro-se litigants at the Arapahoe and Adams County courthouses. Mike and his wife reside in the downtown Denver area.
