Civil Unions Bill
The Colorado Civil Unions Act will be reintroduced in the 2012 legislative session which begins on January 11th. Last year, the bill died on a party line vote in the House Judiciary Committee. Recent public opinion polls and movement within the political community indicate that the bill may have a better chance of passing this legislative session. If the bill passes, the availability of civil unions will not just impact the gay and lesbian community. In other states which have passed similar legislation, more opposite sex couples entered into civil unions in the first year after the passage of the bill than same-sex couples. Civil Unions will provide all Coloradoans with a legal option other than marriage to obtain relationship recognition.
