Helping Children Cope with Divorce

Couples and their children will feel stress and confusion when the family unit is experiencing a legal separation or divorce. Many children feel angry, sad and scared when confronted with the possibility of their parents divorce because the uncertainty of their future is frightening to them.

Although you are concerned about how your divorce will affect your children, be confident that you and your kids can successfully navigate this transition together. Your ability to communicate openly with them will ease their fears and have a reassuring effect. Show them that they can continue to count on their parents to meet their needs and to provide them a safe and secure environment.

Maintaining a civil and professional relationship with your ex will also ease their concerns. Given ongoing, love, support and understanding from you and the other parent, your children will be able express their feelings, grieve their loss, and emerge from the challenges of divorce or legal separation as stronger and more resilient individuals.
