As the chairperson for the Rotary Emergency Services Award, this committee awards members of local fire departments, sheriff’s deputies and police officers who demonstrate outstanding public service in an emergency situation.

Today, the bi-annual Rotary Emergency Services Award was presented to Larimer County Sheriff Alderden on behalf of four Larimer County Sheriff’s deputies and sergeant’s who saved the lives of two young children during a violent confrontation involving their father, James Whitler. When the process-server, Stephen Allen  from Fort Collins, attempted to serve divorce papers to Mr. Whitler at his home, he was attacked by Mr. Whitler. Following what proved to be a fatal attack on Mr. Allen, Mr. Whitney then attempted to stab and strangle his two children. Wife Lisa Whitler called 911, and Sgt. Gerry Baker, Sgt. John Fayen, Deputy Stephen Gates and Deputy Kevin Kingston immediately responded. Without waiting for additional emergency personnel, the deputies entered the home when they heard the cries of the children, and subdued Mr. Whitler. The children were immediately transported to the hospital and have been released.  Mr. Whitler has been found guilty of 1st degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with an additional sentence of 48 years in prison.

The Harris Law Firm congratulates the Larimer County Sherriff’s Office for their example of courage and bravery in an emergency situation.
