Divorce Rate Declines During the "Great Recession"

A positive side effect of the current economic downturn is that the US divorce rate declined during the first full year of what is being called The Great Recession.  According to Census Bureau data, the divorce rate fell 4 percent in 2008 to 16.9 divorces per 1,000 married women, . It had previously been on an upward swing, rising from 16.4 divorces per 1,000 married women in 2005 to 17.5 in 2007.

But research shows that some couples may remain married only until economic conditions improve. If past trends are an indicator, some of the decline in the current divorce rate may be due to couples delaying divorce because they simply cannot afford it or need the resources of the estranged spouse.

Other couples, however, may use the downturn to rediscover why they got married in the first place. Recession may remind them that marriage is not just an emotional relationship and is a union based on much more than just being in love. Marriage is also an economic partnership and social safety net.  There's nothing like economic hard times to help spouses gain new appreciation for their ability to be there for each other and to find strength in their partnership.
