If You Pay Child Support, Get Copies of the Paperwork from Family Support Registry
James Powell of El Paso County in Colorado Springs, Colorado has been paying child support for years, but for the benefit of someone else's children, not his own children!
Powell stated: "The money that has been taken out of my paycheck every month has gone into someone else's account,"
Powell recently discovered the problem when he got someone else's child support paperwork in the mail. Powell said that he and that man have the same name and their ex-wives' names are similar.
Powell believes that thousands of dollars have taken from his paycheck to pay child support for his three daughters but the funds never made it to them.
El Paso County Child Support Services deputy director Dan Savage was recently interviewed by KRDO-TV and said "I haven't seen a mess like this, and I've been doing this for 10 years. It's a total fluke, essentially two cases commingled in the computer system." Savage said state computer analysts are now sorting out the problem and accounting for the missing money. He said the issue should be resolved some time this week.
Attorney Kevin Massaro at The Harris Law Firm said that if you are paying child support and have little or no communication with your former spouse, make sure that you obtain copies of the paperwork from the Family Support Registry to ensure that your payments are being credited to the proper account.
