Reasons for Supervised Parenting Time

The courts have various reasons for the implementation of supervised parenting time in the State of Colorado:

1. If a parent has not been actively involved the child’s life and is being introduced or reintroduced, the courts often order that the parenting time be supervised during the early stages of the process.

2. If a parent has a medical issue that could compromise the safety of the child, the courts may order that supervision is necessary.

3. If a parent has been found to be neglectful of the child in the past, the court may rule in favor of supervision during parenting time based on the parents previous behavior.

4. If the parent has problems with addiction or substance abuse, the courts may require that parenting time be restricted while the parent is in treatment and their progress is being tested and monitored.

When ruling to implement supervised parenting time, the objective of the court is often an attempt to change the parent's previous behavior, and to ultimately lift the restrictions to allow parenting time under more natural circumstances.
