According to Hui Liu, a professor of sociology at Michigan State University, recent research suggests that younger people have fewer coping skills than older people when dealing with the emotional stress associated with the dissolution of marriage.

The study indicated that younger people need more support from their families, friends and society as a whole to deal with the emotional aftermath of divorce.

There were 1,282 participants of various ages in Liu's research that measured the health status between those who remained married during the 15-year study and those who divorced. Research reported people who divorced between the ages of 35 and 41 reported more health problems than those who got divorced in the 44 to 50 age range.

Lui expected that divorce would be less stressful for younger couples, but found that the negative health impact was stronger for younger people than it was for the older generations. Liu said this may be due in part to the fact that societal pressure to marry and stay married was far greater for older generations, and subsequently those who had endured a bad marriage for many years experienced relief following their divorce.

Lui concluded that the reseach also indicated that it was not the status of being married or divorced that affected the participants health, but was the process of transitioning from marriage to divorce that was stressful and harmful to their health,"

Lui's research and findings appeared in the research journal Social Science and Medicine. (ANI)
