Senate to Hold Initial Hearing on Equal Rights for Same Sex Couples
The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is the agency that currently denies federal recognition and benefits to same-sex married couples.
The Obama Administration says that it will support legislation to repeal DOMA and replace it with the Respect for Marriage Act, which would overturn DOMA.
The bill, introduced by California Senator Dianne Feinstein, would uphold the principle that the US government should allow gay and lesbian couples the same rights and legal protections as straight couples.
The Senate is scheduled to hold an initial hearing today on the Respect for Marriage Act.
