Social Media Cited in One of Every Five Divorce Cases

According to a recent survey of divorce lawyers by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the use of information obtained via Facebook and other forms of social media has been cited in more than 20% of divorce cases.

Lawyers report that when one spouse begins to communicate via social media with a love interest from their past, their ongoing communication often leads them to a deeper connection. Typically, people who begin these interactions have no intention of having an affair, but the more they communicate, the more likely it is that they will create a meaningful relationship and start to have feelings for one another.
If you are married and a friend from your past contacts you via social media, keep yourself out of trouble by first sharing with them that you are married and are committed to your spouse. Keep your connection friendly but infrequent, and most importantly, be aware that having secrets from your partner is going to create problems for you down the road.
