Tawni L. Cummings

Tawni has made practicing family law her life’s work. She first developed a passion for helping people through difficult times during her days at the University of Denver College of Law’s clinical program for clients in need. At DU, she fought for domestic violence victims’ rights, assisted people with divorces, and helped her clients with a variety of other difficult life situations. Over the course of her career, Tawni has excelled at helping people navigate through crises in their lives.

Since she earned her license to practice law in 1996, Tawni has handled domestic relations matters of all kinds, ranging from dissolution of marriage cases to appellate work. One of her proudest accomplishments involved representing a partner in one of Colorado’s first civil union dissolution of marriage cases. Tawni successfully obtained a division of property rights and award of maintenance (spousal support) based on the parties’ long-term relationship, rather than just limited to the brief time their relationship had formal legal recognition.

Tawni moved every few years as a child, living in many different states across the country, including two years in South Korea. As a result of her rather nomadic childhood, she learned a lot about diverse people and cultures. These experiences were invaluable to Tawni’s development as an empathetic attorney who is well equipped to handle the wide variety of challenging legal situations she has encountered over the years.

Tawni recently returned to the Harris Law Firm, where she worked 13 years ago, and is excited to rejoin the team! During her time away, Tawni successfully ran her own family law firm, had a couple of children, and enjoyed spending a few years at home with them.

In her free time, Tawni loves to run, and recently completed the Chicago Marathon. Tawni’s current legal interest is learning about the ever-changing area of reproductive law, including laws governing IVF, surrogacy, embryo/egg/sperm donation, and more.
