Co-Parents Can Lead Their Families in the Right Direction in Spite of the Pandemic

While the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult to endure in many respects, it is also an unprecedented opportunity for positive change. Here are some examples of ways that divorced families can make lemons into lemonade.  

1. Extend the Other Parent Extra Grace and Support One Another:

Your co-parent may have made you upset at some point during this time and, because our moods are more likely to fluctuate right now, it was probably difficult to navigate the disagreement gracefully.

However, it will serve your entire family for you to work with your co-parent as a united front, rather than in opposition to one another. Here is a great example of a divorced family that did just that. Show the other parent compassion and forgiveness even if that is difficult. Doing so has the potential to positively transform your relationship in the long run.

2. Work Together to Teach Your Children Timely Life Lessons:

There are so many lessons to learn from this experience. Teaching your children something new will bring you the comfort of knowing that positive change came from this trying situation. The following are some examples of valuable life lessons to teach your children now:

  • Being Healthy is Vitally Important
  • Gratitude has a Powerful Impact on Your Mental Wellbeing
  • It is Important to Volunteer and Support Those in Need
  • How to Grieve the Loss of a Loved One in a Healthy Way
  • How to Care for a Sick Family Member in a Safe Way

3. Work on Your Co-Parenting Goals:

With the extra time we are spending at home, now is a great time to assess and improve your relationship with your co-parent. Consider the areas that you have been meaning to work on in your relationship with your co-parent and take action. Perhaps you want to communicate about the children’s education more or make the two households’ rules more uniform. Maybe you have been wanting to create a more detailed shared calendar of the children’s activities. You may have been interested in discussing your goals with a mental health provider so that you can improve your co-parenting skills. Since the stay-at-home orders have changed the way that we are living our daily lives, it is a good time to make improvements that will last even after the pandemic subsides.
