Continued Rise of Divorces in Older Couples

Jennie Wray

Updated 1/15/2021

Although we have recently witnessed a 50 year low of finalized divorces in 2019, we have noticed a continuing trend of rising numbers of divorces amongst individuals over the age of 50. Many explanations exist for the same. Some include: financial reasons, couples growing apart, infidelity, variations of aging lifestyles, better health and life expectancies, and the involvement of adult children.

As one can imagine, there are several issues that may surface when older couples divorce. Most common is the existence of a more complicated marital estate, including issues surrounding income, maintenance (or otherwise called alimony or spousal support in other states), and retirement benefits. Other issues include complications obtaining life insurance coverage, competency, and long-term care. If you or someone you know needs assistance with navigating these difficult life decisions, please contact The Harris Law Firm. Our attorneys are well-versed in handling these complex issues.
